Midwest Diet and Exercise Trial (M-DEx)

Thank you for your interest in the Midwest Diet and Exercise Trial (M-DEx) with the University of Kansas.

The Midwest Diet and Exercise Trial (M-DEx) is designed to investigate 3 different methods of delivering a weight management program in a primary care clinic. You will be randomly assigned to one of three weight management interventions for 24 months. Each of the possible intervention groups include 6 months of weight loss, 12 months of weight maintenance, and a no contact 6-month follow up phase. You will not be able to pick the group assigned to you. The three possible groups are:  

  • Group Phone
  • Individual Phone
  • Enhanced Usual Care

Overview of Group Phone and Individual Phone

Diet: During the weight loss phase you will consume a 1200-1800 calorie diet that is made up of commercial prepared portion controlled meals including 2 shakes, 1 serving of non-fat dairy, 2 entrees, and 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. You will be responsible for purchasing frozen entrees from the grocery store (i.e. Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, Smart Ones, Michelina’s, Amy’s Kitchen).

Physical Activity: You will be asked to perform physical activity that will progress slowly to 225 minutes of exercise per week. You may choose the type of physical activity you want to do (walking, biking, swimming). 

Overview of Enhanced Usual Care Group

Diet: You will be asked to consume a nutritionally balanced 1200-1800 calorie diet. You will be provided examples of meal plans consisting of suggested servings of proteins, grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, and fats based on your energy needs during both weight loss and maintenance.

Physical Activity: You will be asked to perform physical activity that will progress slowly to 150 minutes of exercise per week. You may choose the type of physical activity you want to do (walking, biking, swimming). 

Qualifications

  • Be 21 +
  • Have a BMI between 25 and 45 (determined at official screening by our staff).
  • Be committed to participate for 24 months.
